EMDR Therapy: Protocol, theory and research

In this webinar, Psychologist, and EMDR Consultant and Training Facilitator Liam Spicer will provide an overview of EMDR therapy, including all 8 phases of this complete and transdiagnostic psychotherapy approach.

Liam will discuss the theory underlying EMDR therapy, the Adaptive Information Processing Model (Shapiro,1995), and how through application of this model EMDR can be applied with many different clinical presentations. Case examples will be included along with supporting literature demonstrating the benefit of addressing underlying causes of mental health challenges and using transdiagnostic psychotherapies with the clients we support.

Liam will provide an overview of the current status of EMDR research not only for PTSD and trauma, but also for other mental health challenges. It will highlight the increasing need for clinicians to be trained in trauma focused interventions and provide some guidance on further opportunities for training and skill development in this space.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand the 8 phases of EMDR therapy and its application as a treatment for trauma and other clinical presentations
  • To learn about what populations EMDR is being used with, and how the Adaptive Information Processing Model applies to working transdiagnostically with EMDR
  • To gain knowledge of the current evidence base for EMDR with not only trauma and PTSD, but also other clinical presentations including research on how EMDR is being applied with disasters and other levels of intervention.

This webinar is suitable for any mental health professional regardless of if they have been trained in EMDR or not. It can be a useful introduction for people not trained, and a refresher and update for those already trained and actively using EMDR.

Please note: This webinar does not constitute training in EMDR as a therapy to be used with clients.  This session is an overview and summary of the approach. For training opportunities, please see the EMDRAA website for requirements and options.
