Psychedelic Assisted EMDR

As restrictions on psychedelics are lifted across the globe, their promotion as a ‘magic-bullet’ treatment for many psychological presentations has resulted in the growth of usage in non-medical settings, with an inevitable increase in adverse psychological reactions. Currently, there are insufficient protocols in place to support individuals who abreact, and EMDR offers a trauma-focussed alternative.

This presentation explores how the 8-phases of EMDR can be adapted to work as a comprehensive preparation and integration tool as well as a stabilisation intervention for people experiencing adverse reactions to psychedelics.

Hannah Raine-Smith and Jocelyn Rose from UK based Bridge to the Matrix are independent researchers and psychotherapists specialising in working with complex trauma using eye-movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. They are co-authors of the book ‘Psychedelic-assisted EMDR - A memory consolidation approach to psychedelic healing’ due out with Routledge NY later this year. Their research explores the unfolding potential of EMDR as a trauma-focussed, scalable psychedelic preparation and integration tool, with a particular emphasis on inclusivity and supporting individuals with an impaired capacity to self-regulate.

As a team they have extensive training in attachment, neuroscience, trauma and working with complex psychological presentations. Their clinical training in trauma integration using adaptive information processing (AIP) model informs their research into psychedelic-assisted EMDR.
