Medicare budgets for psychology sessions ‘woefully underfunded’

Posted on 7 May 2024

AAPi Budget recommendations for further investment in Psychology have been featured in the Daily Telegraph, the Courier Mail, The Mercury, Gold Coast Bulletin NT News, and Sky News today.

AAPi President Sahra O'Doherty appeared on Sky News' AM Agenda, calling for the additional 10 subsidised Medicare psychology sessions to be reinstated.

"The reduction of sessions to 10 has forced people to ration their sessions because they can't afford to see a psychologist with the frequency and regularity they need for their treatment," she said.

"Another thing the AAPi is calling for is an increase in the Medicare rebate for psychology sessions across the board. Currently it is unworkable for psychologists to bulk bill - a lot of them are running their own private practices and we need a sustainable rebate to make that affordable for clients.

"Medicare budgets for psychology sessions are woefully underfunded... the rebate needs to be $150.

"There also needs to be large scale investment in the mental health sector and more investment in rural and regional areas across Australia," she said.
