The Psychology Board of Australia’s revised English Language Skills (ELS) registration standard is now in effect. Key updates include:
-
Expansion of recognised countries (with South Africa’s removal effective from March 2026).
- Reduction of the writing test score requirement from IELTS 7 to 6.5 (or equivalent).
- Addition of the Cambridge English language skills test.
- Extended validity for test results when applicants have worked in recognised countries.
- Increased timeframe for accepting results from two sittings (from 6 to 12 months).
- Renaming of pathways for clarity and accuracy:
‘Primary language pathway’ → ‘School education pathway’
‘Extended education pathway’ → ‘Advanced education pathway’ (with clarified eligibility and flexibility).
These changes aim to enhance flexibility and accessibility while maintaining public protection. The Board’s website has been updated with guides, FAQs, a pathway selection tool, and video content to help applicants navigate the new standard.
